GRINCH-ISH FINCHES

SIDEWAYS
A squadron of Grinch-ish goldfinches landed in my zinnia bed. The goldfinches are Grinch-ish because they are stealing some of summer from the hummingbirds.  They are plucking the zinnias bare of petals. The two little male finches in the squadron were bold enough to continue their petal fest while I sat on the porch and snapped pictures of them. (For once, I had the camera out there at the right time.) The two little females, who are more plain in color, saw me sitting there and flew away.  These sunshine-colored little guys perched and plucked petal after petal, snapping the seed end off and eating it, little petal plucking, seed eating machines.
ANYMORE PETALS OR SEEDS LEFT ON THIS ONE?  NO!
Aren't these little guys bright and pretty!  I love to watch their antics as they hold onto the flower stems, sometimes sideways, sometimes upside down, and sometimes doing the splits while holding on to two different stems.
THIS LITTLE GUY IS DOING THE SPLITS ONE BIRDIE FOOT ON EACH STEM
They no longer make the little squeaky toy call that they did in the past.  This time, as I was watering the flowers, I could hear them in the nearby trees making a little chuffing sort of call to each other. I wondered what kind of birds were making that sound.  When I quit watering and sat down on the porch, down they fluttered.
GOLDFINCHES, I LOVE YOU...I LOVE YOU NOT....I LOVE YOU, EVEN IF YOU ARE A LITTLE GRINCH-ISH
Luckily, I planted A LOT of zinnias this year.  So there are enough for them and the hummingbirds to share.

  2. Oh, they are naughty little grinch~ish finches ~ but such pretty ones. Gardening these days is all about striking that balance of give and take ~ you give the zinnias they take the petals ~ and you take a lot of pleasure in watching them. Garden birds are one of the bonuses of planting a garden ~ Waving from Across The Pond :)

  4. Looks like there'll be food a plenty for everyone in your garden. My little finches are eating the seeds from the sunflower heads as I type this. I hear them chattering between the Ash and Maple tree out front. Love to watch them flutter like butterflies down to the bird bath.
    I loved this post.

  6. My hubby and I had a good time reading several of your blog posts. The birds caught his eye because we have lots of birds in our backyard because we feed them, so he's always interested in what kinds of birds everyone else gets. Then he spied your Styrofoam container of tomatoes, and we read about using Tums in your container veggies. How clever! Your flowers are beautiful! I commented on how you could tell you don't live in this part of the countries or they'd all be burned up by now from the awful heat. Anywho, just wanted to let you know we enjoyed reading! I'll be back soon!
