Bandanas!? Has the CDC gone bananas?

I never would have thought that I would live in a United States of America where the Center for Disease Control would recommend that our nurses, doctors, and medical workers use bandanas
as masks during a deadly viral disease pandemic.  Nurses in my city are soon going to be reusing their mask for 5 wearings. They work 12 - 14 hours wearing that mask, and then at the end of the day will put it in a paper bag and mark it with an x, take that contaminated mask out the next day and put it on again, after there are 5 x's on the bag they will get a new mask, until all of the masks are gone.  After they run out of masks, I don't know what their options will be.  I hope something better than a bandana.  When bandanas as protection for our medical workers comes to pass, I believe that CDC leaders and our President and other politicians should be forced to spend a day in a hospital shadowing some of our medical personnel wearing a bandana to protect them against coughs and sickness.  I imagine they would move heaven on earth to get masks and protective gear for medical personnel if they thought that would happen to them.

Our political leaders who are dithering and not working full speed with everything they've got had better realize that everyone who loses a relative to this virus will remember the slow government response when it comes time to vote again.   Every wife, husband,  mom, dad and grandparent, aunt, uncle, brother, sister, and friend of our nurses and doctors and other medical workers whose lives are being put in danger by the lack of action to get production moving on medical supplies will also remember this dangerous lack of action by our leaders when they vote again. If we all survive to vote again.

It was sad, maddening, and disappointing to hear our President say that the Federal government isn't a shipping clerk, and then words to the effect that the states need to take care of this.  In my opinion, he should have been saying he is there to do everything in his power to help our people, tell him what we need, and he will work as hard as he can to get it done.

Are we on our way to becoming a bandana republic?

  3. Good morning dear Susie,
I think nobody is to blame at this moment. Most important is to follow up the advises that are given and keep other people at distance. But a lot of people still thinking that it's a joke.
    Stay save in good health.

  4. I read yesterday that President Trump is using the Defense Production Act to urge companies to make more masks. Some companies that don't ordinarily make them, such as GM, are working on doing so.

    1. Dear Lynn,

The President has not yet started to use the Defense Production Act yet, even though he has spoken about it, he has not yet used it. I do not understand why.

Many people's lives are at risk, including my daughter who is an RN, so I take this failure of action on the part of our Washington politicians personally. If he really wants to be considered a Wartime President, maybe he should actually use the Defense Production Act to save lives.

  6. Hello, I came over because I saw you had left a comment on Flower Lady's Musings, and I think it was your name that drew my attention: Persimmons and moons have a nice ring to them! So I'm in Canada and we were freaking out when our nurses were asked to wear plain surgical masks and save the N95 ones for paramedics and doctors and situations that really called for the heavier duty ones. Imagine your nurses told to wear cloth! On Monday, it was confirmed that a nurse tested positive, here in Ottawa where I live-- and that is just what we don't need. I'm sure there's a shortage of health care workers, everywhere. We have to protect them. Hopefully companies are moving quickly, if politicians don't, to get masks made locally. I'll be thinking of your health staff and praying for your country. Blessings to your home and family!

  7. Hi, Susie! Thanks for visiting my blog this morning. I appreciated reading this post. I feel as you do about the events you shared above. I have been appalled, angry, and disbelieving as I have watched our president respond to this crisis. Like you I never thought I would see something like this in our country. And I will remember everything when I vote. I realized that each of us has to do everything we can to care for and protect ourselves and our loved ones. Meanwhile I can express gratitude for and pray for the wellbeing of our health care personnel and those who support them ~ As well as all our first responders and the countless essential others who are doing their jobs to help our country. Take care. Be safe. All the best to you!

  8. this crisis is unprecented in our life times and everyone is struggling to find a way through it. last night, the president spoke and answered questions and he has done a complete turnabout from what he said in the past.. if you did not watch it, this is it on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5A_URVApXE he is about to put new things on that will help the health care workers. I agree with you, bandanas are not the answer

  12. I would never have dreamed that we would have a killer virus this severe and people would want to expose themselves to by partying, marching by the hundreds shoulder to shoulder for a funeral, going to the beach and crowding together, and just doing unnecessary things that they get themselves exposed to it. So here we are with more and more states opening up while there is still not enough available testing and the infection rates are not falling.

These fools are infecting others who are working in essential jobs, where they are putting their lives on the line doing good in this world.

While the dimwits play beach blanket bingo, get massages, get their roots touched up, get a tattoo, etc.

I am so sorry that your daughter has Covid 19. I hope she will recover soon. I hope your two granddaughters stay healthy.

I'm a regular reader of your blog and am so sorry that your son passed away.

    Take care.

  20. Hi Susie, IMO, like everything else in life, it isn't what life throws at us, but how we handle it that's important. It seems that things are NOT being handled well - not by the government and not by many many people. Putting the economy and/or education over people's lives doesn't sit well with me... even though I do realize that these things are important and must be considered. But let's get our priorities straight...

What I have taken from all this is how so many people don't seem to really care... and also how many don't believe in medical science. I do realize that medical doctors don't know everything (especially with this new virus) but they certainly have learned something over the years with other viruses... and to be honest, they're recommendations seem to follow common sense.
Take care, my friend. This craziness is just going to get worse in the following months (with November coming up).

  22. I was busy making mask for my niece who is an RN working in a Covid unit. When this first came out, she asked me to make her cloth mask. So I made 4 layered mask with a pocket. At first I had to make the ties because I had no elastic. I still use the one I made and I can breathe fine with it. I am in Calif and we have to wear mask. Most people are following the distance and mask requirements. Schools are closed in my school district. So sad that so many people have died.

  23. Thank you so much for your comment today, Susie. I'm just getting back to my blog again after mask making and working on our genealogy project. In fact, I just wrote a post for tomorrow about masks. I agree with you 100% of course. They're now saying bandanas are really ineffective. Granted they learned more since you posted. It's crazy that our country totally DID NOT mobilize when they had the chance. I do blame the president for that. And I blame him now for constantly saying masks aren't important and yet everyone around him has to be tested when going near him.

  24. Dear Susie
What an eye opener post...we hear little of the true reality of covid in your part of the word. How harrowing. How so terribly unfair. My wee part of the world is largely unaffected, and your post has really hit home. Take care of you and your beautiful family.

  25. We live in the country and don't have a lot of people around us unless we drive into town. Our daily lives have not changed that much as others who live in urban environments. When I look for someone to throw blame at, I believe China could have stopped this in Wuhan. They shut down transportation to their main land and then allowed transportation to other countries when this virus began. At this point what does blaming do for any of us?

  26. This blog post was from back in March. So much has happened since then. The virus possibly could have been controlled in Wuhan better than they did. But in my opinion our government could have done a much better job once the virus was here on our shores making sure there were enough supplies such as N95 masks, protective wear, and gloves for our workers in hospitals. They could have also done a better job of providing testing kits for the virus. Once the virus was here it was 100 % our country's responsibility to provide the supplies needed to keep our medical workers safe. Hopefully, President elect Biden and his appointees will do a better job getting protective supplies to our medical personnel.

  27. Thank you so much for your comment today, Susie. Merry Christmas to you and yours! So interesting about your kids.
By the way, I was wondering about the CDC walking back from their earlier recommendation that churches not hold choral singing etc. because it was not OKed by the White House. Ummm.... They need permission from the White House? This is really terrible.

  28. Merry Christmas Day Susie! So nice to let me know that you came by. Thank you for the lovely compliment. Yes, such a different holiday this year. I don't like looking ahead so much, but I have spent a lot of time thinking about NEXT Christmas. I hope you get to hold that sweet babe before too long.

  29. Thank you for your comment.

Thankfully, the mask shortage was taken care of several months ago. My post about the bandannas was many months ago. The hospital where my daughter works was running low on masks at that time and they were wearing their N95 masks several work shifts in a row. At the end of their work day they would mark the plastic bag that their mask was stored in with an x. I think it was for 5 work shifts they would wear the same mask. Thank goodness there were finally enough masks to go around, a month or so after my post, and they became disposable as they are meant to be. It is good we seem to be making a bit of progress fighting Covid 19 with the vaccines being made available as soon as they can be manufactured.

    Take care.
